Rectal route in the 21st century to treat children.

Jannin, V., Lemagnen, G, Gueroult, P., Larrouture, D., Tuleu, C.

Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews, 73 34-49. doi: 10.1016/j.addr.2014.05.012

This article reviews the use of the rectal route for the pediatric population. Main advantages are that these dosage forms are neither to be swallowed nor need to be taste-masked, and can be administered in an emergency to unconscious or vomiting children. The review contains the list of all drugs used in pediatrics rectal forms, some insights on excipients and manufacturing processes, new dosage form developments, patient acceptability, and child physiology.
