Sensitive skin, smart solutions

How to formulate with care?

Once the domain of dermatological products, the claim "for sensitive skin" has made its way into the mainstream. Today, nearly 1 in 4 new cosmetic products carry this claim. But this is more than a marketing trend. Indeed, 71% of adults now say they experience skin sensitivity to varying degrees.

Whether it’s due to pollution, stress, UV exposure, or simply genetics, sensitive skin transcends all skin types and is becoming the new normal. And that means cosmetic formulations need to rise to the challenge.

What is sensitive skin, really?

Clinically speaking, sensitive skin is defined by sensations like tightness, stinging, burning, or tingling in response to stimuli that wouldn’t bother normal skin. In more severe cases, people experience pain, itching (pruritus), or strong discomfort from everyday products and environmental triggers.

The surge of sensitive skin is fueled by increasingly harsh environmental factors such as UV exposure, pollution, and stress. Consumers are also becoming more knowledgeable on the detrimental effects of external factors on skin health. While they are actively seeking ways to protect, soothe, and strengthen their skin, they are turning to science-backed skincare for help.

The art & science of formulating for sensitive skin

Creating skincare for sensitive skin is not just about removing harsh ingredients. Scientific understanding of sensitive skin has advanced significantly in recent years. Research indicates that skin sensitivity is linked to barrier dysfunction, environmental stressors, and a pro-inflammatory state.

This means formulators must work across multiple dimensions. That’s why sensitive-skin-friendly formulations must typically focus on:

  • Barrier reinforcement: Ingredients that protect essential epidermal lipids and maintain optimal hydration levels.
  • Anti-inflammatory actives to calm inflammation and oxidative stress.
  • Minimalist ingredient lists: Transparency and safety are top priorities for consumers. Many sensitive skin formulas now limit INCI lists to under 15 components to reduce the risk of reactions. “Free from” claims are also very popular in this category, such as free from fragrance, sulfates, etc.
  • Enhanced sensoriality: to encourage compliance and regular use of the product, formula for sensitive skin must provide delight and comfort for the very first application
  • Robust testing protocols: Claims like “dermatologically tested,” “hypoallergenic,” or “clinically proven for sensitive skin” must be backed by in vitro and in vivo data

At Gattefossé, we work hand-in-hand with formulators to navigate these technical and emotional demands, developing sophisticated textures, rigorously tested bioactives, and clean-label ingredients that support both skin health and product enjoyment.
