Taste Masking Agents

To hide unpleasant taste while keeping a rapid dissolution profile is often the key challenge in the development of a taste masked dosage form. Gattefossé has successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of lipid excipients as taste masking agents by two processes:
  • hot melt coating (Gattecoat® process) is a proprietary solvent-free process that takes place in a fluidized air bed whereby a melted excipient is sprayed on the fluidized drug particles. The fine lipid droplets solidify upon contact with the drug and ultimately create a lipidic film around each particle.
  • melt granulation or melt pelletization is an agglomeration process that takes place in a high shear mixer. Granulation/pelletization is obtained by addition of a solid lipid binder that melts during the process.
