Our Application Laboratories characterize and optimize the performance of our excipients in drug delivery systems. We use standard lab-scale processing equipment to develop formulation and processing guidelines, undertake practical studies to answer technical queries and find solutions for our customers.

Example oral dosage form projects
- Development of sustained drug release dosage forms by direct compression and using processing techniques such as hot melt coating, melt granulation and spray cooling.
- Development of self-emulsifying lipid formulations for solubility and bioavailability enhancement.
- Optimization of Solid-SELF systems which involve the absorption of a Liquid-SELF onto an inert compressible powder, to provide the performance of liquid solubility and bioavailability enhancers in tablet form.
Example topical dosage form projects
- Development of creams, ointments, gels and fluid sprays with optimized drug delivery features, stability and sensorial properties which are maintained in our formulation database.
- Early stage formulation development services help to resolve stability issues.
Example rectal and vaginal route projects

Customer training
The know-how of our Applications Laboratory is incorporated into a teaching programme we have developed for our customers. The two-day ‘Lipid School’ describes how to formulate to achieve functional performance with lipid excipients in oral, topical and rectal and vaginal dosage forms and can be hosted at some Gattefossé sites, or at our clients’ premises.
